Friday (day 29)

Hello all. Last night Shawna did not go back on the ventilator at all. She is progressing quickly. She has been off the ventilator for over 36 hrs. We have been told that if she can stay off for 48 hrs she will be moved up to the stepdown unit of either floor 6(trauma) or floor 7(neuro). They must be pretty confident of this as the ventilator is no longer present in Shawnas room. The nurses have said it will most likely happen this weekend when they need a bed for another ICU patient as she is the most ready patient able to move. . Another good development is they have again started feeding Shawna through her feeding tube and it has so far been succesfully absorbed into her system. She spent another hour in the "neuro chair", and seems now to be settling in for a good nights sleep. We will keep you posted about location and visiting hours as more than just immediate family will be able to visit her. Please do not visit if you are sick as she is still fighting hard and doesn't need to fight needless infections as well. I know that Deb worries about the fact there will no longer be one on one care. It will be one to three and after a couple of days one to four or six. It may be a few days again for me to wean her from the hospital. We leave all things in our Fathers hands as he is taking care of his child. We thank and praise Him for the blessings he has given Shawna today! Thanks again for your messages and prayers. Al and Deb

ps. I will put a few pictures of Shawna on the Facebook page "freinds and family of Shawna Bethlehem" for those who cannot visit

Dear Bethlehem and Hoeksema families, and other loved ones,
Indeed, we have only thanksgiving and praise to render to our Father for his innumerable blessings displayed in Shawna's recovery! How exciting it is to hear of the improvements, both small and great! May you continue to cling to the mercies of our heavenly Father, that He will guide the hands of Shawna's caregivers. May He be pleased to provide continually His healing hand, and to restore his child to health. We pray that you may continue to experience God's nearness during this time, as you and your dear Shawna continue to be lifted up in prayer to Him, the Giver and Sustainer of life! Also, much strength as you prepare for the upcoming change of location. May God remove the anxieties and worries that would accompany such a development!
Blessings,
Ryan Kampen & Jessica Bartels

What wonderful news. It is so amazing to see the progress Shawna has made so far. We all know it is a long road ahead, and pray for guidance and patience as you wait by her side each day. Deb remember to get your rest as Shawna will need you all to be rested and able to care for her in the coming days and weeks. May God continue to give you all that you need and be with Shawna as she continues to take steps toward recovery.

What wonderful news! We rejoice with you in Shawna's continuing progress. Her move to a step-up unit certainly indicates that things are moving along well.

We can understand that Deb will want to be a "mother hen" keeping a very close eye on Shawna once she moves; but don't forget to take care of yourself, too, Deb. Shawna needs for you to be healthy.

We pray that our Heavenly Father will guide all the health care professionals that are caring for Shawna and will give them wisdom in her treatment.

You all remain in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Al & Deb and siblings

I have been thinking about all of you since the day of the accident. I followed Shawna that morning on her way into the city and I was about an hour behind her on the way home. When I saw the car at the side of the road I felt it was familiar but was not sure who had a car like that. It bothered me all the way home. At 7pm I received a phone call from one of the firefighters asking who the Bethlehem's are and I knew then that Shawna was the perons in the accident. You have all been in my thoughts ever since. I have your families picture from your christmas card 1 year ago on my desk and everyday i talk to Shawna, and pray for her to keep getting stronger. Shawna is young, healthy and strong. She is fortunate to have so many people who love her and are praying for her. This is a powerful healing!
I am so grateful for the time you take to post on the blog, I look forward to hearing about all the postive steps Shawna is making everyday. God Bless all of you in this trying time.

P.S. Hard to believe Becky is married, how is this possible when we are not getting any older! Give her our congratulations.

Dear Al, Deb and family:
How wonderful to see so much improvement this week. God is an Awesome God. He is able to do what humanly speaking seemed impossible. When we read the extend of all Shawna's injuries, and to see that you have now started into the 5th week of her recovery, we can only praise and thank Him for all He has given you, and us, in the progress Shawna is making. all these"little" steps have turned into a mayor step towards her recovery. We pray that the Lord will continue to give you all your daily needs as you go on holding onto His promises. Deb, remember, even when you need to rest, and be away for a night, our heavenly Father neither slumbers, nor sleeps. He has shown you that He is the one looking after Shawna, and He will continue to hold her in His Hands, even if her Mom needs to take time to rest.
Take care of yourself, both of you.
with love from Andy and Tina van Yken.
